How to Prepare for Copper T Insertion–What to Expect

When it comes to birth control, women need not always depend on their male partners. They can take control and prevent unwanted pregnancies from their end as well. IUD – Intra Uterine Devices are a very effective form of birth control that comes in two forms – Copper IUD and Hormonal IUD. Let’s take a look at the Copper IUD and how you can prepare for it.

What is a Copper IUD?

Copper IUD

A Copper IUD is a tiny, flexible device in the shape of a “T”. It is made of plastic and has copper wires around it. It is a non-hormonal form of birth control to prevent pregnancy. The IUD will prevent the sperm from reaching the egg, thus effectively preventing pregnancy. It will also change the uterine lining and make it less ideal for pregnancy.

Copper IUD is suitable for all women, even those who have never been pregnant or given birth before, for those who are still breastfeeding, or even teenagers. It can also be used as an emergency contraceptive by inserting it within 5 days of unprotected sex. The copper IUD is a suitable form of long-term birth control for women who want to avoid hormonal birth control.

Is Copper IUD Safe and Effective?

The copper IUD is more than 99% effective when it comes to preventing pregnancy. It can stay inside the uterus for between 5 to 10 years, depending on the device. A routine check of the device is necessary to ensure the device is in place and there are no complications.

An infection due to a copper IUD can happen in the first few weeks following insertion. In very rare cases, long-term use of the device can cause Pelvic actinomycosis, a disease caused by anaerobic bacteria.

A copper IUD is not recommended in the following cases:

● During pregnancy

● Recent pelvic infection

● Active or untreated pelvic, vaginal or uterine infection

● Wilson’s disease

● Presence of uterine fibroids or tumours

● Cancer – cervical or uterine

● Allergy or intolerance towards copper

● Unexplained bleeding after sex or between menstrual periods.

Risks of Copper IUD Insertion

Inserting a copper IUD carries the following risks:

● Accidental perforation or tearing of the uterine wall when placing or removing the IUD.

● The IUD can fall out on its own

● Chances of infection just after the insertion or removal of the IUD

● IUD is only 99% effective. Pregnancy is still a rare possibility.

Copper IUD Insertion Preparation

Here is how you can prepare yourself for the Copper IUD insertion procedure:

● Take all medications as prescribed and follow instructions.

● Schedule your day to ensure you get enough rest after the procedure. Preferably, do not have any serious commitments for the rest of the day.

● Avoid driving back by yourself. It is advisable to take someone with you as you may feel nauseous or uncomfortable soon after the procedure.

● Keep your supplies ready – sanitary pads, panty liners, painkillers, ice packs, heating packs, food and entertainment.

Copper IUD Insertion Process

Copper IUD Insertion Process

Here is what you can expect during the insertion of a copper IUD:

1. You will be on your back with your legs up in stirrups.

2. Your doctor can inject local anaesthesia or use a numbing cream around the vagina to help reduce the pain and discomfort.

3. The health care professional will conduct a pelvic exam to check the vagina and uterus.

4. They will clean the vaginal base and cervix using an antiseptic solution.

5. Using a speculum, the vagina is kept open for better access and view.

6. Through the cervical opening, your doctor will place the IUD inside the uterus.

7. They will trim the IUD strings and remove the speculum.

8. You might feel nauseous, bleed or experience cramping for the next few minutes.

9. You can rest for a few minutes and leave if you feel fine.

10. If you experience intense pain, are cramping or sweating profusely, your doctor may prescribe some over-the-counter painkillers, make you stay longer and then let you go.

11. Your doctor might also do an ultrasound to ensure the device is in the right spot.

Copper IUD Insertion Pain Management

Inserting a copper IUD or a Copper IUD can be painful and uncomfortable for some women. The experience varies from woman to woman depending on her body, threshold of pain, etc. Some factors that can influence this experience are:

● If it is your first time, it can be uncomfortable as you are unsure what to expect.

● For women who have never given birth before, the insertion may be painful.

● If you have a history of painful periods or cramping during a pelvic exam, the insertion can cause some discomfort.

● If you are feeling anxious or stressed, the muscles can tighten up, causing more pain and discomfort.

You can try the following to reduce the pain and discomfort during and soon after the Copper IUD insertion:

● Try to relax your pelvic muscles by taking deep breaths. Relaxing can help loosen the muscles and reduce discomfort.

● Reading, listening to music, or the company of a loved one can help reduce your anxiety before the procedure.

● Ask your doctor to prescribe some over-the-counter painkillers to take before and soon after the procedure.

● Using local anaesthesia to numb the area before insertion of the device can help reduce the pain.

● You can even consider sedation, though most doctors will not recommend this.

Copper IUD Insertion Aftercare

Though inserting a Copper IUD is very simple, aftercare is essential. Avoid inserting anything into your vagina for the next 48 hrs. This includes tampons, menstrual cups and sexual intercourse. It is also advisable to avoid swimming or sitting in a bath for the next 48 hours.

What to Expect After Copper IUD Insertion

Once your IUD is in place, you can expect the following. Remember, not all women experience all these after-effects. You may or may not experience a few or all of them. Each woman’s experience is unique.

● You may experience heavier menstrual bleeding.

● Menstrual cramps can be more intense or painful than before.

● Periods can become irregular.

● Spotting between periods.

Conclusion

A copper IUD is a very effective form of long-term birth control. It removes the stress of taking pills or carrying a condom with you at all times. Since it is a non-hormonal IUD, it does not cause any changes in hormones, moods, etc. Preparing yourself for some pain and discomfort during the insertion can provide long-term relief. With proper care and regular checkups, a copper IUD can be very safe and effective.
