Pregnancy can be a tricky phase for many women. The list of foods you can or can’t eat can be overwhelming at first. However, you need to be cautious of what you eat as it can affect not only you but the baby, too. Spices are an integral part of cooking, and not all of them are safe during pregnancy. ● The body may not be able to digest the herbs and absorb the nutrients effectively. So, you may think you are consuming essential herbs but your body and the baby may not be getting much of the benefits.

● Some herbs can be easier on the body when processed into medications or mixed with other ingredients.

● The herb or spice may not be safe if you or the baby are suffering from some health issue.

Some commonly used spices and herbs that are considered safe during pregnancy (when consumed as instructed and within limitations) are:

Ginger root – Age-old home remedy for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. It can also help strengthen the immune system, and respiratory system and improve metabolic function in the mother.

Peppermint Leaf – Can help with nausea and vomiting; can help with aversions to smell; can also ease flatulence, which is a common issue in pregnancy.

Slippery Elm Bark – When the inner bark is used orally, it can help relieve nausea, vomiting and also soothe vaginal irritation.

Red Raspberry Leaf – A rich source of iron that can help in strengthening the uterus for pregnancy, decrease nausea, even ease labour pains and increase milk secretion. Red raspberry leaf tea is quite well-known for its positive impact on the uterus.

Oats & Oat Straw – A rich source of calcium and magnesium that can help with restlessness and anxiety in pregnancy. It can also help soothe irritated skin.

Garlic – A commonly used spice in food preparations. Garlic can help improve immunity and cardiovascular and respiratory health. It also has antioxidant properties and is better eaten in its natural form than taken as a supplement.

Fennel – A common spice in the Indian household that can help with morning sickness, digestion and breastmilk secretion. It is also a good source of folate – an important nutrient for baby’s brain and spine development.

According to some studies, oral consumption of the following herbs is not very safe during pregnancy:

● Saw Palmetto

● Goldenseal

● Dong Quai

● Blue Cohosh

● Roman Chamomile

● Pennyroyal

Now, that list does not look like something you might ever consume, whether pregnant or not. Here is a list of herbs and spices that you may use in your regular life but is best to be avoided during pregnancy:

Chamomile – Very well known for improving sleep quality but increases the risk of preterm labour and miscarriages.

Rosemary – This herb is safe when added as a seasoning to our favourite dishes but when consumed in excess, it can stimulate your uterine contractions.

Aloe Vera – Can be very good for topical application during pregnancy to reduce itchy skin and stretch marks, but oral consumption can be unsafe. Some reports suggest it can cause miscarriages.

Licorice – A common Ayurvedic herb used in India, which is also used as a flavouring agent in many confectioneries is best to be avoided during pregnancy as it can harm the developing baby.

Sassafras – A herb well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties may seem like a good choice for pregnancy-related constipation. However, it can be very strong and lead to a miscarriage and stimulate menstrual flow.

Cinnamon – A very common spice, which is safe when added for flavouring in dishes but can be unsafe when consumed in large quantities. Many people add cinnamon bark or powder to their drinks to reduce blood glucose levels. It is best to consult your doctor before consuming this for your gestational diabetes.

Fenugreek – A common spice with many health benefits can be dangerous if consumed in excess during pregnancy. Consulting your doctor regarding the dosage is advisable. The same applies to cloves and peppermint.

Saffron – A very common addition to the pregnancy diet for its multiple health benefits. Some studies suggest it is safer to avoid saffron during the first trimester of pregnancy.

3. If you notice any side effects or reactions, discontinue consumption immediately. Never wait to see if it can get any worse before checking with your doctor.

4. Listen to your body. Not everything that’s healthy or good, will suit your body during pregnancy. if your body is sending out warning signs, listen to it and alter your consumption accordingly.
