Being overweight can lead to many health complications, some reversible and some that change your life forever. Traditional methods of dieting and exercising do not always work well for everyone. Some people need an initial push after which they can maintain the weight. This is where medical weight loss options come in.

Medical Weight Loss Options

Medical weight loss is a customised weight loss method supervised by a healthcare professional. In addition to custom-made diet charts, exercise, and lifestyle changes, FDA-approved drugs or methods are used to achieve effective weight reduction.

Many people prefer these medical weight loss options as the weight loss is quicker and sustainable, making it more effective in the long run. Medical weight loss options include –

  • Medications – These include prescription medications, such as injections and pills, to manage hormones and control appetite.
  • Endoscopic Procedures – These are minimally invasive procedures to reduce the size of the stomach by either placing a balloon inside or suturing it up. This reduces appetite and consumption, thus leading to weight loss over time.
  • Bariatric Surgery – This is an invasive approach where the size of the stomach is effectively reduced through surgery.

What are GLP-1 Injections?

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, more commonly known as GLP-1, are designed to control type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking certain hormones to stimulate insulin release, slow down stomach emptying, and thus signal the brain to feel fuller for longer. Lower food intake and more insulin reduce blood glucose levels. Today, they are increasingly used for weight reduction and management.

GLP-1 Injections for Weight Loss – Pros and Cons

Pros

The GLP-1 injections are increasingly becoming popular for the following reasons –

  • Very simple and easy to use
  • Suppresses hunger cravings to effectively reduce calorie intake
  • Stimulates insulin production to reduce and regulate blood sugar levels
  • Through weight loss, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular issues and improves metabolism.

Cons

Some disadvantages of using the GLP-1 injections are –

  • Can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and other gastrointestinal issues in the initial days
  • Rapid weight loss leads to loss of muscle mass
  • Stopping the medication can cause weight regain
  • Injections can be very expensive
  • Not covered by all insurances
  • In very rare cases, can increase the risk of certain thyroid cancers, pancreatitis, or gallbladder issues.

What is Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure to alter the stomach to reduce weight and food intake. Different types of Bariatric surgery are –

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy – Surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach to reduce food intake and suppress appetite.
  • Gastric Bypass – Reroutes a portion of the intestines, creating a small stomach pouch to reduce intake and absorption.
  • BPD/DS – A complex procedure combining restriction of food intake and malabsorption.
  • Gastric Band – A band is placed on the top part of the stomach to reduce its size and food intake.

Bariatric Surgery for Weight Loss – Pros and Cons

Pros

Many people are opting for bariatric surgery due to the following advantages –

  • Significant weight loss in a short span of time
  • Weight loss can be maintained long-term
  • Can reverse type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea
  • Reduces the risk of certain cancers and heart issues

Cons

Some disadvantages of Bariatric surgery are –

  • Involves the usual risks associated with surgeries – anaesthesia complications, infections, blood clots, etc.
  • Required lifelong supplementation for essential nutrients.
  • Rapid emptying of consumed food into the small intestine can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
  • Requires permanent lifestyle changes.
  • Increases the risk of gallstones and loose skin.
  • You may regain the weight if you don’t maintain the lifestyle changes.

Bariatric surgery vs GLP-1 injections

Both Bariatric surgery and GLP-1 injections have their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

While GLP-1 injections are more pocket-friendly and user-friendly, the results are not sustainable if you don’t put in the effort to keep the weight off once the treatment stops. These injections are not covered by insurance policies, unless they are specifically used to treat type 2 diabetes.

Most people lose almost 80% of their excess weight within 2 years of surgery and tend to keep it that way in the long term. The chances of weight regain are much lower, thus reducing the risks of health issues related to obesity and excess weight. Very few insurance policies cover parts of such surgeries if patients meet the required criteria. The recover post surgery requires effort, time and patience.

Many people use a combination of bariatric surgery and GLP-1 injections for long-term, sustainable results.
